Don't 'Fake It Till You Make It. Act as If.' June Ryan on Writing Your Own Story

Skift Take

How did Ryan navigate that challenge to rise to the rank of Rear Admiral? "I learned the principal 'Act As If'," Ryan explained.

When Rear Admiral June Ryan, CEO and founder of June Ryan Global Solutions, was 10 years into her career in the United States Coast Guard, her ship ran aground. She was taken to Admiral's Mast, which is just below a court martial. Ryan was punished with a punitive letter of reprimand placed on her permanent record that would factor into every future promotion and assignment.

How did she navigate that challenge to become the first enlisted woman to rise to the rank of Rear Admiral? "I learned the principal "'act as if,'" Ryan explained. "That was 20 minutes of a 10-year career. I'm not going to let that define me."

This clip features a portion of Ryan's keynote delivered at the 2024 Women Leading Travel & Hospitality Summit, held June 10-12 in Charlotte.
