Kristie Goshow on Shifting One's Mindset for Industry Success

Skift Take

Industry leaders will need to have a paradigm shift as they look toward all that's ahead, Kristie Goshow, chief marketing officer of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, said during the Women Leading Travel & Hospitality Virtual Exchange.

“My mind explodes when I think about all of the exciting things ahead of us,” Kristie Goshow, chief marketing officer of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, said during the Feb. 25 Women Leading Travel & Hospitality Virtual Exchange.

Industry leaders will need to have a paradigm shift as they look toward all that's ahead, Goshow said.

“Never before has our industry been forced to open their eyes, open their ears and truly listen,” she said.

Regarding what to do, Goshow said to “defy the corner chair.” Go into any hotel room, big or small, anywhere in the world, and there will always be a corner chair, she said, adding it epitomizes what has been a lack of creativity over the years.

“COVID[-19] has changed the way we see the corner chair,” Goshow said. “I think now people are prepared to say, ‘It doesn’t need to be there, take it out of the room. What else could we put into that space? How could we create an environment with that space to do something different for a guest today that we haven’t done in the past?’”

There are outside forces and then there are mindsets, and everyone needs to adapt a growth mindset, Goshow said.

“I think we have everything to win right now provided we can change our mindset,” she said. “Forget what we knew. We’re breaking new ground now and that’s the most exciting part. We have all the talent we need to do some really brilliant things, we just have to get out of our own way to do it.”
